I climb in the morning. Later in the day, six or eight hours afterwards, I pull a bit of lichen from my hair. I feel around. My whole head is full of crumbled lichen, dislodged from branches as I reached above me.
This, I find myself thinking, is a not unreasonable definition of a good day: a day in which one finds lichen in one’s hair.
